Accident
and Emergency
When it comes to your health or the health
of someone in your family, it is often very obvious if the
person is seriously ill and needs emergency care. You should
get medical attention by either taking the patient to
Accident and Emergency (A & E) or telephoning for help on
999.
What is an Emergency?
An emergency is a critical or life
threatening situation – and to help decide what a critical
situation is does involve some of the following
examples:
- Unconsciousness
- Heavy blood loss
- Suspected broken bones
- A deep wound such as a stab wound or
cut
- A suspected heart attack
- A baby with a very high temperature
- Difficulty in breathing
There a few things to remember in an
emergency; these will help you deal with the situation
quickly and efficiently:
- Stay calm
- Do everything you can to help the
person, but do not put yourself in danger
- Do not give the person anything to
eat, drink or smoke
- Do not put anything in the person’s
mouth
